NPP Communications Director, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of disregarding the principles of independence, accountability and neutrality in appointing Emelia Afi Agbenyo as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.
Aboagye argued that the governing party should have considered other candidates instead of making an appointment that, in his view, could generate controversy over the independence of the electoral management body.
“Why is the NDC doing this? So they have no human beings in the party who are even subtle members?” he asked on Joy FM during an interview.
He said political affiliation alone did not necessarily have to disqualify a candidate, suggesting that even a disputed allegation of party membership could be addressed through an explanation or defence.
“Let there even be a controversy over the person’s affiliation. We accept it. Let the person be accused to the NDC and let there be some defence to it. We accept it,” he said.
However, he condemned what he described as the appointment of someone who appeared on political programmes as an NDC representative to a position requiring independence.
“But to the extent that you blatantly disregard every principle when it comes to independence, accountability, neutrality, and appoint this lady who goes on political shows as an NDC rep is a complete shame,” he said.
Aboagye described the appointment as a disregard for the standards expected of the Electoral Commission’s leadership and accused the NDC of attempting to portray the appointee as neutral despite his objections.
“This shameless attempt by the NDC to say, ‘Oh, she’s a neutral,’” he said, dismissing the party’s purported position.
