The story of a Ghanaian doctor who started her career as a nurse

Dr Marie-Christine Osei-Wusu has achieved her ambition of becoming a medical doctor after first qualifying as a nurse and later enrolling in a medical programme at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Osei-Wusu completed her medical education in 2026, earning a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), according to a social media post by Serwaa Kyeretwie on October 12, 2026, celebrating her achievement.

Her journey began with nursing education at the University for Development Studies (UDS), where she studied from 2014 to 2018 and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

She subsequently completed her mandatory one-year National Service at the KNUST Hospital, gaining clinical experience before making the decision to pursue medicine.

Rather than settle into a conventional nursing career, Osei-Wusu turned her attention to medical school and secured admission to KNUST's fee-paying medical programme.

Osei-Wusu declined a nursing employment opportunity to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor.

The decision meant choosing further education over a more immediate route into traditional employment after completing her nursing training.

Her transition also required a commitment to another demanding programme of study, building on the knowledge and experience she had acquired as a nurse.

She completed the medical programme in 2026, adding the MBChB qualification to her nursing degree and Registered Nurse (RN) credentials.

Her transition to medicine was reportedly supported by a beauty business she started while studying nursing.

The business grew over time and became a source of income that helped her finance her medical education.

According to the post, she pursued her dream of becoming a doctor, while juggling her responsibilities as a wife and mother of three.
