A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Tolon constituency of the Northern Region, Chief Akilu Sayibu, has called on the party to avoid holding parliamentary primaries in the constituency ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Chief Akilu Sayibu, who previously expressed interest in contesting the party's parliamentary primaries in the constituency, believes the NPP should prioritise unity and adopt strategies aimed at retaining the Tolon parliamentary seat.
The former Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority said the incumbent Member of Parliament, Habib Iddrisu, should be given another opportunity to lead the party into the 2028 elections.
According to him, the party must focus on strengthening its structures and mobilising support for the incumbent MP rather than engaging in potentially divisive internal contests.
"I have no intention at all of contesting parliamentary primaries in the Tolon constituency at this time," Chief Akilu Sayibu disclosed.
He explained that resources that would otherwise be spent on parliamentary primaries should instead be channelled into strengthening the party's image and positioning the incumbent MP for victory in 2028.
The former NPP parliamentary candidate for Tamale North has therefore urged his supporters, family members and well-wishers to disregard any reports circulating on social or traditional media suggesting that he intends to contest the party's parliamentary primaries in Tolon.
Chief Akilu Sayibu further called on party members to rally behind Habib Iddrisu and support his efforts to retain the parliamentary seat for the NPP.
He expressed optimism that a united front in the constituency would also contribute to the party's broader objective of securing victory for former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2028 presidential election.
Chief Akilu Sayibu also announced plans to embark on a media tour to explain his position and advocate unity within the party ahead of the next general elections.
