Social media personality, Daniel Amartey, widely known as ‘Short Prophet,’ has opened up about his harrowing ordeal serving a five-year sentence at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison over crimes allegedly committed by his deceased employer.
Speaking during an interview on the Convo with the Face podcast, the former deputy captain of Ghana's national midget football team, the Black Giants, detailed how a normal day at work turned into a life-altering nightmare.
Amartey explained that the trouble began in 2015 following the death of his boss. A month after the funeral, the deceased’s family asked him to reopen the shop to help generate income for the surviving young children.
However, just four weeks after resuming work, officials from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) raided the premises alongside a handcuffed associate of his late employer.
"They came and asked about my boss, I told them he was dead. They then said they were there to search the shop," Amartey recalled.
"During their search, they came across a cabinet which had been locked since my boss died and asked for the key to it. When I told them I didn't have the key, they broke it open and retrieved some documents and materials they claimed were used to forge fake certificates,” he added.
Despite maintaining his complete ignorance of the forged items, Amartey was arrested and held in detention for a week before receiving bail.
His legal battle was further hindered by financial constraints and inadequate legal representation ultimately leading to his conviction and sentencing to Nsawam Prison.
"At the time of my sentence, I was the deputy captain of the Black Giants national team," he revealed, noting that he ultimately served three years and eight months before his release due to prison sentence calculation rules.
The social media figure directly challenged EOCO officials, alleging that officers involved in the operation knew he was merely an innocent bystander caught in an organizational bust.
"The EOCO officials knew I was innocent in all this. They are watching it. If they want, they should come and pick me up if I’m lying.
"I remember a month after I was released, I bumped into one of them... he told me, 'The thing, I know you don't know anything about it, but it is our boss.' He said that. They know the truth," Amartey stated.
Beyond his viral comic skits and digital content creation, Amartey previously served as a key figure and deputy captain for Ghana's national amputee football team (Black Giants), representing the nation in continental adaptive sports tournaments.
