Justine Wilson, the ex-wife of billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, has alleged that he cut off their daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson’s health insurance a day after she came out as transgender.

Justine made the revelation in Musk, a new documentary by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney, which explores the personal life and career of the Tesla and SpaceX chief.

According to Justine, Musk had told her to assure Vivian that he would always love her. However, she claims that the assurance was followed by the termination of the 22-year-old’s health insurance the next day.

Justine, an author and mother of six of Musk’s children, is among the key interviewees in the documentary, which examines the strained relationship between the billionaire and Vivian.

The former couple married in 2000 and divorced in 2008. One of their children, their first son, Nevada, died at 10 weeks old in 2002 from sudden infant death syndrome.

In the documentary, Justine says the tension between Musk and Vivian began when their daughter was young. She described Vivian as strong-willed and recalled an incident when she was six years old, during which Musk allegedly asked her whether she wanted to be a “winner” or a “loser”.

Justine interpreted the remark as suggesting that Vivian would be considered a loser if she did not follow her father’s instructions.

The relationship between Musk and Vivian has since deteriorated publicly, with the billionaire making critical remarks about his daughter’s transgender identity.

Musk previously claimed on X, the social media platform he owns, that he had “lost” Vivian to the “woke mind virus”. Justine said the post caused her daughter considerable emotional pain, adding that Musk had not made efforts to repair their relationship.

She also criticised what she described as Musk’s response to Vivian’s transition, saying he treated it like the death of a child.

Recalling the death of their infant son, Justine said she had challenged that comparison by pointing out that the family had experienced the actual death of a child, whereas Vivian was growing up and developing her own identity.

Justine further reflected on the challenges parents face as their children become independent, saying that successful parenting ultimately involves accepting that a child’s life will no longer revolve around the parent.

Musk did not participate in Gibney’s documentary and has dismissed it as a “hit piece”. His legal representative has also threatened legal action over what they described as factual distortions in the film.

The documentary, which runs for approximately four hours, is scheduled for a nationwide theatrical release on October 16, following screenings in select cinemas.

Meanwhile, Vivian recently spoke to People about her views on artificial intelligence during an interview in September, while promoting the fall 2026 campaign for Spanish fashion label Desigual, titled Born to Disobey.

She argued that artificial intelligence undermines artistic expression, maintaining that art conveys human emotion and that AI-generated work replaces underlying intention with what she described as plagiarised colours and shapes.
