Mustapha Gbande, a Deputy National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, has raised concerns about internal friction within the party’s government.
Speaking on Asempa FM recently, the NDC Deputy General Secretary accused some appointees of President John Dramani Mahama, including ministers, their deputies and chief executives, of engaging in conflicts rather than working together to deliver on the government’s promises.
Gbande said that some government appointees who did little to help the party win power were now using their positions to engage in internal battles, a situation he believes could undermine President John Dramani Mahama’s administration and frustrate party supporters.
He asserted that the people surrounding the President could undermine his performance if these acts continued.
“I want to see that President Mahama has succeeded. Normally, it is not that the presidents are not good. It is the people around him. If they want to mess you up, that is how they start. They run in silos – nobody wants to work with the other.
“Some people did nothing when we were fighting to win power; we won power and gave them positions. Now they are fighting with their deputies; deputies are fighting with their ministers. How do you want the party people to feel?” he asked.
He argued that such conduct was particularly troubling because party supporters were expecting government appointees to work towards improving their welfare after the NDC’s return to power.
“While party members are waiting for us to work hard and take care of them, you’re using the power to fight,” he added.
Ministers don’t talk to their deputies
Gbande further alleged that the disagreements extended beyond ministers and their deputies, claiming that some chief executives of state institutions were also failing to maintain working relationships with their deputies.
He questioned why the party’s leadership should tolerate such conduct under the guise of obedience, arguing that it was irresponsible to remain silent while internal divisions persisted.
“And you expect the party’s leadership to tolerate this, and they say that is obedience… only irresponsible people would sit and allow this to happen,” he said.
“As we speak, there are ministers who don’t talk to their deputies, deputies don’t talk to their deputies, CEOs don’t talk to their deputies. Some are paying journalists to destroy each other,” he alleged.
Gbande calls for reshuffle
The NDC Deputy National Organiser also disclosed that he had repeatedly called for a ministerial reshuffle, insisting that he had discussed his position with President Mahama.
He added that because of this, some people in the NDC were also saying that he should be removed from his position.
“I have spoken to the President. He knows my stance on this. I have called for a reshuffle every day. And because of this, some people are saying that if Mustapha says there should be a reshuffle, let us include him.
“They don’t know that the position I’m occupying at the Jubilee House is what is restraining me… Do you think we would suffer for someone from outside to come and enjoy? It is the position that the President has given me that has restrained me, and I am sitting quietly doing my job,” he added.
