Ghana is preparing to formally apply for membership of BRICS after Cabinet approved the move as part of the government’s efforts to diversify the country’s international partnerships and expand its economic opportunities.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the decision during a meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, who was in Ghana for an official visit from October 6 to 7, 2026.

According to Mr Ablakwa, Ghana’s proposed membership of the bloc forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen economic cooperation and deepen ties with countries in the Global South.

He stressed, however, that joining BRICS would complement, rather than replace, Ghana’s existing relationships with traditional development and financial partners.

India, a founding member of BRICS, is expected to play a key role in Ghana’s bid. Dr Jaishankar disclosed that Ghana had formally sought India’s assistance in its quest to join the bloc.

He said India had consistently been sympathetic and supportive of Ghana’s aspirations and goals, while noting that the country’s application would ultimately be considered collectively by BRICS members.

The announcement came as Ghana and India reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening longstanding bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across several strategic areas during Dr Jaishankar’s visit.

Ghana’s proposed application signals the government’s intention to broaden the country’s international engagement and explore additional avenues for economic and diplomatic cooperation through BRICS.

However, Ghana’s prospective membership will depend on the collective consideration and decision of the existing member states.
