President John Dramani Mahama has said Ghana’s foreign direct investment (FDI) increased from $624 million in 2024 to $2.62 billion in 2025, describing the rise as a sign of growing investor confidence in the economy.
He made the remarks during a visit to workers at the Nestlé Ghana factory in Tema on Thursday, October 8, 2026, following the official commissioning of the company’s new evaporated milk production line.
Government calls for increased private sector investment amid economic reforms
President Mahama said the increase in investment had coincided with falling interest rates, lower inflation and a stronger cedi, which he believes are helping to improve the business environment in Ghana.
“Inflation, which stood at 23.8 percent, is down to about 5.2 percent,” he said, adding that the cedi had regained strength and was performing relatively well.
The President also said interest rates were falling, with spreads ranging between 9 and 13 percent, as the economy continued to show signs of improvement.
He stressed that the figures mattered not only for economic reports but also for the decisions companies make about expanding their operations and committing more capital.
“I do not recite these figures for their own sake, because stability is not a number in the report,” President Mahama said.
He explained that economic stability could determine whether a company put an expansion plan on hold or proceeded with an investment.
According to him, improved economic conditions could also give international investors greater confidence when making business decisions.
“It is a difference between a company that shelves an expansion and one that decides to go forward with investments,” he said.
President Mahama acknowledged that businesses still had to consider currency risks when making investment decisions.
However, he described Nestlé’s investment in Ghana as a welcome sign of confidence in the country’s long-term prospects, saying it aligned with the industrial ambitions of the government’s Reset Agenda.
