Managing Director of Tema Oil Refinery Edmond Kombat has been named the Energy Sector Recovery Programme (ESRP) Champion of the Year 2026 in the petroleum sector in recognition of his contribution to reforms aimed at improving efficiency and performance in Ghana’s energy industry.

The award was presented by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, at the ongoing Energy Sector Performance Review Retreat.

The award recognises heads of institutions within the energy sector who have made significant contributions to the objectives of the ESRP, particularly in revenue generation, cost reduction, operational efficiency and good governance.

Introduced in 2025, the ESRP Champion Award forms part of efforts to encourage leadership, accountability and improved institutional performance across the energy sector.

The recognition highlights the importance of effective management and institutional reforms in addressing challenges within Ghana’s energy industry, including financial constraints, operational inefficiencies and the need to strengthen revenue mobilisation.

The petroleum sector plays a critical role in Ghana’s economy, contributing to government revenue, industrial activity and national energy security. Improving the performance of institutions operating in the sector is therefore essential to ensuring that available resources are managed efficiently and deliver greater value to the country.

The Energy Sector Performance Review Retreat provides an opportunity for stakeholders to assess the performance of energy sector institutions, review progress on ongoing reforms and identify measures to improve service delivery and financial sustainability.

The ESRP is aimed at strengthening the overall performance of the energy sector through measures designed to improve financial management, reduce costs, enhance operational efficiency and promote transparency and accountability.

Kombat’s recognition places emphasis on the role of institutional leadership in advancing these objectives and supporting the broader reform agenda for Ghana’s energy sector.
