The University for Development Studies (UDS) have been knocked out of the West Africa University Games (WAUG) football competition after hosts Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) edged them 4–3 on penalties in a tense semi-final clash in Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

The Ghanaian champions, who went into the tournament seeking to defend their title, held the hosts to a goalless draw after 90 minutes before OAU kept their nerve in the decisive penalty shootout to book a place in the final.

The contest lived up to its billing as a battle between two of the region’s strongest university football sides, with both teams refusing to give ground from the opening whistle.

Roared on by a passionate home crowd, OAU attempted to take control early but found a disciplined UDS defence standing firmly in their way. The Ghanaian side absorbed pressure when required and responded with attacking moves of their own as the game quickly developed into an end-to-end contest.

Tackles flew in, attacks were fiercely contested and both goalkeepers were kept alert as the two sides searched for the breakthrough.

Despite the intensity and several promising moments in front of goal, neither OAU nor UDS could find the decisive touch, with both defences holding firm to force the match into a penalty shootout.

That was where UDS’ title defence ultimately came to an end.

OAU converted four of their penalties, while UDS managed three, handing the Nigerian hosts a 4–3 victory and sparking wild celebrations among the home supporters.

For UDS, the defeat brings a painful end to their hopes of retaining the WAUG football crown, but the Ghanaian side can take pride in a determined performance against the tournament hosts.

The result is also a setback for a team that arrived in Nigeria with a formidable reputation as both African and World University Football Champions.

OAU’s victory, meanwhile, gives the hosts a major boost in their bid to win the football title on home soil after eliminating the reigning champions in dramatic fashion.
