Former National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has deferred his appearance before Parliament, citing an ongoing investigation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.
In a statement issued by his legal counsel, Jerry Avenorgbor of Brookman Amissah & Associates, Mr Ampofo Ankrah said he and his representatives would refrain from making detailed public comments on the allegations while the investigation remains ongoing.
The statement said Mr Ampofo Ankrah has cooperated with investigators and will continue to do so to assist the authorities in establishing the facts and bringing the matter to a conclusion.
His legal team also urged the public and media to exercise restraint and avoid presenting allegations, speculation or unverified information as established facts.
“It is important to emphasise that the fact that an investigation is underway does not, in itself, constitute a finding or determination of wrongdoing against Mr. Ampofo Ankrah or any other person,” the statement said.
Why he will not appear before Parliament
The seven-year plan Nkrumah drew up to transform Ghana's economy
Mr Ampofo Ankrah’s lawyers said appearing before Parliament while the CID investigation is active could potentially prejudice or interfere with the process.
They also noted that he remains under suspension, making it “imprudent” for him to appear before Parliament on matters directly connected to the ongoing investigation.
The legal team stressed that the decision should not be interpreted as a refusal to submit to lawful processes or account to Parliament or any other constitutionally mandated institution.
Instead, they said it was intended to protect the integrity of the investigation and prevent any action that could compromise the process.
According to the statement, Mr Ampofo Ankrah will respond to any lawful requirement to appear before Parliament or another competent institution if his suspension is lifted and he is restored to his position as NSA Director-General at the discretion of the Office of the President.
His legal team said all substantive public commentary on the issues under investigation would remain on hold until the relevant authorities complete their work and formally announce their findings.
