Detention, Office Search, CCTV Seizure: Details of Manhyia South MP’s EOCO ordeal

Manhyia South MP voluntarily reports to EOCO over alleged financial offences Manhyia South MP voluntarily reports to EOCO over alleged financial offences

Following the voluntary appearance of Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, before the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), accompanied by his lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea, a series of developments have occurred after a court order authorised his arrest.

EOCO is investigating alleged unauthorised financial transactions, suspected financial losses to the state, dissipation of public funds and money laundering at SIC Life Savings & Loans Company Limited.

The probe centres on Baffour Awuah’s law firm, Sarkodie, Baffour Awuah & Partners, which was engaged to recover a debt from Equity Savings & Loans for SIC Life.

According to allegations contained in EOCO documents, Baffour Awuah allegedly settled a debt without board authorisation, received irregular payments from conflicting parties while representing SIC Life and distributed funds to a former Managing Director.

Since the MP voluntarily reported himself to EOCO, his lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea, has disclosed a number of incidents that have occurred in connection with the ongoing investigation.

Spent Night in Custody

Lawyer for the Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Samuel Atta Akyea, disclosed that his client has been detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and spent the night in custody.

According to the lawyer, EOCO intends to continue interrogating the MP on Friday, October 2, 2026.

He said his client voluntarily reported himself to EOCO and had cooperated with investigators throughout the process.

Atta Akyea questioned the need for the MP to spend the night in custody when investigators already had access to the documents they were seeking.

Office Search

The Manhyia South MP was also taken from the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in the company of investigators.

The investigators accompanied the MP to his office to execute a search warrant as part of the ongoing investigations into alleged financial irregularities, suspected financial loss to the state and related offences.

According to his lawyer, EOCO investigators also wanted to search the residence of the Manhyia South MP.

However, Atta Akyea said the investigators did not have a warrant authorising a search of the MP’s residence and, therefore, did not gain access to the house.

CCTV Control Unit Seizure

Samuel Atta Akyea further disclosed that when EOCO officers accompanied Baffour Awuah to his office, the investigators seized the control unit of his CCTV system, which stores recordings of activities captured by the cameras.

The lawyer questioned the relevance of the CCTV control unit to the matters EOCO is investigating, arguing that its seizure was outside the scope of the search warrant.

He, however, clarified that he was not present when the search of his client’s office was conducted.

“They did not have the warrant to go and search his house. The warrant they gave us and we read, was about his office. They even took the machine that controls the CCTV from the place, which is not part of what they are investigating. They are investigating a file as to how he conducted himself, SIC vs Equity Savings and Loans,” Atta Akyea told TV3.

Atta Akyea said he questioned EOCO officials after the investigators returned from the search as to why they had seized the CCTV control unit but they could not provide an explanation.

“I questioned them, but they couldn’t answer. When we came back, they showed me all the things they took from his place and they are not connected with matters of investigation,” he explained.

EOCO’s Position

EOCO, in a statement dated October 1, 2026, said the ongoing investigations concern allegations relating to criminal conspiracy, financial loss to SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering, tax-related offences and other matters under investigation.

The investigation follows allegations surrounding transactions involving SIC Life Savings & Loans and the recovery of funds from Equity Savings & Loans, with EOCO examining the conduct of persons connected to the transactions.
