The Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) has commenced investigations into suspended National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah over allegations surrounding a visa facilitation arrangement for Ghanaians seeking to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, according to a citinewsroom.com report on October 1, 2026.
According to the report, the probe centres on claims that more than $600,000 was collected from prospective travellers who were seeking assistance with visa and travel arrangements ahead of the tournament.
The Minority in Parliament has further alleged that some individuals were asked to pay as much as $8,000 under the arrangement.
Ampofo Ankrah, alongside other NSA officials, has reportedly been questioned by security agencies as investigators seek to establish what happened.
NSA Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah sacked
The development follows Ampofo Ankrah’s suspension as NSA Director-General, with Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong appointed to act in the position.
The NSA has, however, denied authorising any scheme involving the collection of money for visa facilitation.
The Authority has also rejected suggestions that its relationship with TRIBE FEST, a FIFA-licensed partner involved in fan experiences, viewing events and mobilisation, included permission to collect funds for visa procurement.
According to reports, the allegations were formally brought to the attention of the police through a petition reportedly submitted to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on September 8, 2026.
Ampofo Ankrah subsequently appeared before the CID and denied the allegations against him.
The NSA has maintained that it neither established an office nor authorised any service to facilitate visas or collect money from people seeking to travel to the World Cup.
