A 57-year-old Ghanaian man has died in a tragic subway accident in Brooklyn, New York, after the backpack he was carrying reportedly became trapped between train doors and dragged him down.

The deceased, identified as Yaw Boahene, was involved in the incident on “September 28, 2026, at the Utica Avenue subway station in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn.

According to investigators cited by ABC7, Boahene was attempting to exit a Manhattan-bound train when his backpack became caught in the closing doors.

The train subsequently moved, pulling him backwards and dragging him between two subway cars before he fell onto the tracks.

The New York Police Department said officers were alerted to the incident through a 911 call at about 6:05 p.m. local time.

When police arrived at the station, they found Boahene unconscious and unresponsive on the tracks used by northbound A trains. Emergency Medical Services personnel later pronounced him dead at the scene.

In a statement, the NYPD said the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner would determine the official cause of death.

Police also indicated that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident were continuing.

The incident has reportedly shocked passengers who were at the station when it occurred.

A witness who spoke to ABC7 said she was on her way home from school when the accident happened. She described a scene of panic among passengers on the platform as people reacted to what had happened.

Boahene's death is the latest in a series of serious incidents involving New York City's extensive subway network, although such accidents remain relatively uncommon.

In 2022, another passenger, a 20-year-old man, died after his clothing became caught in the doors of a No. 1 train at the Columbus Circle station in Manhattan during the evening rush hour.

Figures from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which operates New York City's public transportation system, show that subway customer accidents increased by 2% in 2025.

The authority, however, said the increase in accidents was lower than the growth in subway ridership during the same period. As a result, the MTA reported that the accident rate over a 12-month period fell by 4.7%.

The circumstances surrounding Boahene's death remain under investigation, while authorities await the findings of the medical examiner.
