Director of Research, Education and Training at the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), ACP Alexander Obeng, has raised concern over the rising number of preventable road crashes, with about 9,000 cases recorded between January and August 2026.
The crashes involved approximately 15,000 vehicles.
ACP Alexander Obeng, disclosed the figures while speaking on A Question of Law on Monday, September 28, 2026.
According to him, about 9,000 preventable road crashes were recorded during the eight-month period, highlighting the scale of the road safety challenge confronting the country.
“Between January and August, we can report that we have recorded about 9,000 preventable crashes involving about 15,000 vehicles of all categories and models, with about 11,000 Ghanaians having sustained various degrees of injury as a result of these preventable crashes,” he said.

ACP Obeng said the situation requires collective responsibility from drivers, vehicle owners, passengers and pedestrians to help reduce road crashes and protect lives.
He added that tackling the problem would require both proactive measures, including sustained road safety education, and reactive interventions to minimise the impact of crashes.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service is set to roll out a new digital traffic law enforcement system, Traffitech, from October 1, 2026.
The system is expected to automate traffic law enforcement, reduce human interference and help curb corruption while improving compliance with road traffic regulations.
