Ghana’s 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké on Thursday, September 24, 2026, has made the Black Stars’ route to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations more demanding, but it has not put their qualification hopes in immediate danger.

The Black Stars began Group C with no points after Malick Yalcouyé opened the scoring shortly before half-time before Franck Kessié converted a second-half penalty to seal victory for the hosts.

The bigger issue for Carlos Queiroz’s side is what happened elsewhere in the group.

The Gambia also started with a victory, beating Somalia 2-1 in Banjul. Ebrima Colley gave the Scorpions an early lead from the penalty spot, Somalia equalised through Bilal Njie, before substitute Muhammed Badamosi restored Gambia’s advantage.

That leaves Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia on three points each, while Ghana and Somalia have none after the opening round.

For Ghana, however, the six-match group stage means there is still plenty of football to play. CAF’s format sends the top two teams from each group without a co-host directly to the 2027 tournament, meaning Ghana still has five matches remaining to recover ground.

The immediate opportunity comes on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, when Ghana hosts The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.

That match has become particularly important because a second defeat would leave the Black Stars six points behind the Scorpions after only two games. A victory, on the other hand, would move Ghana onto three points and bring them level with Gambia on the table.

Ghana also still have two fixtures against Somalia and a return meeting with Côte d’Ivoire, meaning the opening defeat does not decide the group.

But the Bouaké result has removed the margin for a slow start.

Ghana already missed the 2025 AFCON after finishing bottom of Group F without winning a single qualifying match, their first absence from the tournament since 2004.

The next five matches will therefore determine whether the Black Stars can quickly turn a difficult opening night into a temporary setback or allow it to become the beginning of another troubled qualifying campaign.
