Cosmetic surgery is gaining attention in Ghana, with procedures such as breast lifts, breast augmentation, liposuction and Brazilian butt lifts increasingly forming part of discussions about body enhancement.

However, a surgeon at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Dr Kwadwo Adae, has cautioned that cosmetic procedures are not without risks and require thorough medical assessment before they are undertaken.

Speaking in a recent interview on Raw with Roselyn, Dr Adae said people with certain skin conditions and underlying health problems may face additional complications, particularly where their conditions could affect wound healing.

“There are some skin conditions. It might not be very common in there, when I say Negro, like the black, the black person. But some people have skin conditions where there is difficulty in healing,” he said.

He also identified diabetes, hypertension and heart disease as conditions that could complicate cosmetic surgery, noting that many procedures require patients to undergo general anaesthesia.

According to him, some patients can breathe on their own while under anaesthesia, while others may require assistance from a breathing machine.

He, however, stressed that multiple procedures cannot safely be performed simultaneously in every case.

The growing interest in cosmetic procedures has also brought renewed attention to the need for safety and proper medical supervision.

It will be recalled that on May 20, 2018, the late Dep NEIP CEO, Stacy Offei Darko, unfortunately passed on after a Liposuction and Fat Transfer Surgery, by Dr Obeng-Andoh.

According to multiple reports, she died at about 1600 hours the following day.

CEO of Obengfo Hospital arrested over death of deputy NEIP CEO

Dr Dominic Obeng-Andoh, Director of the Advanced BodySculpt Centre at the Obengfo Hospital at Weija, Accra, has been arrested and being held at the Nima Police Station over the death of the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship Innovation Programme (NEIP), Stacy Offei Darko.

Offei Darko, 37, reportedly died at the medical facility under mysterious circumstances. Her remains, according to her mother, Nana Akosua Anima, was concealed at the facility by Dr Obengfo for three days before it was sent to the mortuary without the knowledge of the family.

Sources at the Nima Police Station revealed to Starrfmonline.com that Dr Obengfo was arrested with several other accomplices and are helping with investigations.

Officials at the Korle Bu Hospital have also revealed that a post-mortem will be conducted on the remains of the late Offei Darko.

It will be recalled that the Medical and Dental Council closed down Obengfo Hospital in January this year with plans to completely evacuate patients who were undergoing treatment at the facility.

The closure on Thursday [January 27] was the second in a legal action against the facility after the council revoked the license of Dr. Obeng-Andoh in 2013 for operating illegally.

This follows complaints by some patients that they were having complications after visiting the plastic surgery section of the hospital, that is, the Advance Body Sculpture Centre.

The Medical and Dental Council subsequently looked into the allegations and came out with the conclusion that the facility's CEO Dr Dominic Obeng Andoh is not a certified surgeon and is, therefore, practising illegally.

But Dr Obeng Andoh insisted that he was trained in cosmetic surgery in Florida, the USA for two weeks and was awarded a certificate.

He said his hospital was locked down without a warrant.

But some four months down the lane, operations begun in earnest at the hospital.
