The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has clarified that Governor Dr Johnson Asiama ceased to be a member of the Board of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) on May 11, 2026, and has not participated in its meetings or activities since.
The central bank said Second Deputy Governor Matilda Asante-Asiedu now represents the Bank on the GoldBod Board.
In a statement released on September 28, 2026, the Bank said the arrangement is in line with Section 4 of the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140).
BoG Governor reveals resignation from GoldBod Board five months ago
The provision requires the Bank of Ghana to be represented on the GoldBod Board by the Governor or an official of the Bank not below the rank of Director.
The BoG stated that Asante-Asiedu has since assumed the role and represents the central bank on the Board in fulfilment of the statutory requirement.
The Bank added that it remains committed to “the highest standards of governance, transparency and the avoidance of any actual or perceived conflict of interest.”
The clarification follows recent questions about Dr Asiama’s continued role on the GoldBod Board.
Former Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Karaga, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, had raised concerns about whether the Governor’s position on the Board could create a potential conflict of interest, particularly in light of the Bank of Ghana’s previous involvement in financing GoldBod’s operations.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) also raised concerns over the Governor’s role on the Board.
Dr Asiama subsequently disclosed that he had resigned from the GoldBod Board about five months earlier and had not attended its meetings since.
“The law that governs the activities of the GoldBod, there’s a provision there for the Bank of Ghana to be represented either by the Governor or any other official up to the rank of a director. It does not necessarily need the Governor to be there,” he said.
His comments at the Monetary Policy Committee meeting on September 24 were the first public confirmation that he was no longer serving on the Board.
GoldBod has since rejected suggestions that Dr Asiama’s departure indicates a disagreement between the two institutions.
It explained that the arrangement is provided for under Act 1140 and that changes in representation on the Board are not unusual.
