Former Second Lady of Ghana, Matilda Amissah-Arthur, has recalled how she once stunned students at PRESEC-Legon after responding unexpectedly to a message they had written on the classroom board.

Speaking in a recent interview with broadcaster Kafui Dey, she recounted an incident during her national service at PRESEC-Legon, where she taught English Literature, General Paper and Logic.

She said on one occasion, she entered the classroom and found the words ‘Madam, we love you’ written on the board while the students were misbehaving.

Amissah-Arthur said she initially panicked when she saw the message but quickly composed herself and decided to respond in a way the students did not anticipate.

“I look on the board, and I panic to start with. And I gather myself, and I write, ‘I love you, too.’ That’s all. And that’s all. End of story. I love you, too,” she said.

Amissah-Arthur said the response left the boys surprised because they had expected a different reaction from their teacher.

“And they were shocked. They didn't expect that,” she recalled.

She explained that the incident occurred during her one-year national service at PRESEC-Legon after completing her studies at the University of Ghana in 1977.

During that period, she taught English Literature, General Paper and Logic to students, describing the experience as challenging because she was a young graduate teaching boys who were not much younger than her.

She said she only realised after completing her national service that she was barely older than some of the students, adding that two of them were even older than her.

“It was an interesting one year,” Amissah-Arthur said, reflecting on her experience at the school.
