Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz’s statistics have come under scrutiny in comparison to those of his predecessor, Otto Addo, following Ghana’s 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in the opening game of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Otto Addo failed to qualify the Black Stars for the last edition of the AFCON but was retained. He was dismissed before the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a losing streak in friendly matches, despite having qualified the team for the tournament.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) subsequently appointed Queiroz to lead the team to the Mundial, trusting in his vast experience in international football management.

However, the Black Stars won just one game and exited at the Round of 32 after a narrow defeat to Colombia. The Portuguese coach has also begun the 2027 AFCON qualifiers on a disappointing note with a defeat to West African rivals Côte d’Ivoire, despite several key players missing the game.

In terms of statistics, specifically comparing the first six matches played by both coaches after taking charge of the team, Otto Addo appears to have had a better record.

In the former Borussia Dortmund scout’s first six games, he recorded one win, one loss and four draws, scoring six goals and conceding six.

On the other hand, Queiroz won once, lost three matches and drew twice in his first six games, scoring three goals and conceding goals as well.

One major takeaway is that the team has not improved defensively, having conceded the same number of goals, which raises concerns about its defensive solidity.

The team has also struggled in terms of goal scoring under Queiroz, having scored just three goals compared to Otto Addo’s six during their first six games.

The statistics indicate that the team has not improved significantly under Queiroz, and he will need to address these concerns as Ghana seeks to secure qualification for the 2027 AFCON.
