The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has directed an aluminium / metal smelting firm, Ponlok Company Limited at Shai to cease all operations with immediate effect following investigations into complaints of continuous emissions of harmful substances into the environment.

The EPA said the enforcement action was necessary after inspections uncovered several environmental concerns at the company’s facility.

“Protecting the environment is a collective responsibility. Compliance is non-negotiable,” the Authority stated in a post shared on Facebook on Thursday, September 24, 2026.

The inspections identified visible smoke emissions affecting air quality, inadequate pollution-control and monitoring systems, poor housekeeping and sanitation, improper waste disposal, and oil spills within the company’s operational areas.

The EPA said the company had earlier been directed to address the identified concerns and was subsequently granted an extension to take corrective measures.

However, following further assessment, the Authority ordered the company to cease all operations and take urgent steps to install the required pollution-control and monitoring technology.

The EPA reiterated its commitment to protecting public health and the environment while ensuring compliance with Ghana’s environmental laws.

The Authority also reminded businesses and other operators that environmental compliance is a mandatory requirement and not an option.

Ponlok Company Ltd operates as a metallurgical and metal/aluminum smelting enterprise.
