The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre-Tertiary Teachers Union of Ghana (PRETAG) have declared a nationwide strike over unresolved concerns affecting teachers.

The teacher unions said the industrial action, which takes effect Friday, September 25, 2026, follows what they described as prolonged delays, unfulfilled promises and a lack of action by duty bearers, particularly the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).

In a statement issued on Friday, September 25, 2026, the unions said the unresolved issues had created widespread disaffection among teachers and were increasingly being perceived by their members as an act of provocation.

“It must be placed on record that these issues have not only created widespread disaffection, anger, and disillusionment among the rank and file of our members, but are also seen as an act of provocation, which has culminated in this industrial action,” the unions stated.

Among the concerns cited by the unions is the delay in negotiating a new Collective Agreement.

They said the existing agreement has expired, while negotiations for a new one, which should have been completed by June 2026, have not yet been concluded despite several engagements with the FWSC.

The unions also pointed to the failure to automatically place two cohorts of newly promoted teachers who successfully passed aptitude tests in December 2025 and February 2026 on their respective salary scales, with arrears effective January 2026.

They further raised concerns over the failure to implement the Deprived Area Allowance provided for under Section 17(2) of the 2024 Collective Agreement.

According to the unions, the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service were required to review the Deprived Area Report before negotiations on the allowance could be held with the FWSC.

They said the failure to implement the allowance amounted to disregard for the provision in the Collective Agreement, as well as a 2024 ruling by the National Labour Commission and a directive for teachers in deprived or hard-to-reach areas to receive a 20 percent allowance on their basic salaries.

The unions said the accumulation of the unresolved issues, coupled with what they described as threats from their rank-and-file members, had left them with no option but to declare the industrial action.

“In the light of the above circumstances and given the delays, unfulfilled promises on the part of the duty bearers and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) as well as threats by the rank-and-file of our members, we the Teachers Unions, do stand with our members and hereby declare a nationwide industrial action (Strike), effective today Friday, 25th September 2026, to press home our demands,” they indicated.
