Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has recalled the House from recess to sit on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, following concerns over a series of major narcotics seizures involving consignments linked to Ghana.

The sitting, scheduled for 12 noon at Parliament House in Accra, follows a request by the Minority for an extraordinary sitting to examine what it describes as urgent national security concerns arising from the seizures.

A notice issued by the Office of the Speaker on Thursday, September 24, 2026, confirmed the recall but did not state the specific business to be considered during the sitting.

The Minority invoked Article 112(3) of the 1992 Constitution and Order 53 of Parliament’s Standing Orders in requesting the emergency sitting, arguing that the scale of the narcotics seizures requires immediate parliamentary oversight.

Among the incidents cited is the seizure by French authorities of nearly 3.9 tonnes of illicit drugs at the Port of Dunkirk on September 10, 2026.

Speaker recalls Parliament from recess for 'urgent business'

The consignment was reportedly contained in a shipment that had departed from Ghana.

The Minority has also referenced other narcotics seizures since 2025, which it says involve consignments collectively valued at more than US$1 billion.

The caucus wants Parliament to investigate how the consignments were processed, inspected and cleared, as well as the roles played by the various state and security agencies responsible for monitoring Ghana’s ports and preventing illicit trafficking.

It has consequently called for officials from the Narcotics Control Commission, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Ghana Revenue Authority and National Intelligence Bureau, together with relevant ministers, to appear before the House to account for their respective roles.

The emergency sitting is expected to give Parliament an opportunity to seek answers on the circumstances surrounding the seizures and assess measures being taken to prevent Ghana from being used as a route for international narcotics trafficking.
