Ghana had 85.8 million registered mobile money accounts as of August 2026, but only 26.4 million were active, highlighting the gap between mobile money registration and actual usage.
The figures, contained in the Bank of Ghana’s September 2026 Summary of Economic and Financial Data, show that active accounts represented less than one-third of all registered mobile money accounts during the month.
Despite the lower number of active accounts, mobile money activity remained strong, with the value of transactions reaching GH¢518.8 billion in August.
The August figure was up from GH¢354.1 billion a year earlier, representing a 46.5% increase.

It also exceeded the GH¢509.4 billion recorded in July, indicating continued growth in the use of mobile money for payments and transfers.
Transaction volumes also increased, with 1.046 billion transactions recorded in August, compared with 969 million in July.
The mobile money agent network expanded during the month, with active agents increasing from 550,000 in July to 594,000 in August.
The increase in active agents provides customers with more points to access mobile financial services, including cash-in and cash-out transactions.
Meanwhile, mobile money float increased from GH¢39 billion in July to GH¢39.8 billion in August, reflecting the funds held within the mobile money system.
The Bank of Ghana defines an active account as one that has recorded at least one transaction within the previous 90 days.
Therefore, the wide gap between registered and active accounts does not necessarily mean that the accounts are permanently unused, but rather reflects varying levels of engagement with mobile money services.
