Dr James Kwabena Bomfeh Jnr, CEO of CenCES and a lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has said President John Dramani Mahama should be worried about Ghana’s security setup following a series of drug-related arrests abroad.

Speaking on JoyNews on Monday, September 21, 2026, he said the arrests in the Netherlands, Paris, and now South Africa raise questions about coordination among Ghana’s security agencies.

“Why would Ghana be the only traceable source without telling us where it came from? There's a reason and that's why I began by saying, His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama should be worried about his security setup. Internally and externally, coordination is a problem,” he said.

“There are many things I can say to advance this argument, but because we are dealing with these narcotics, I will leave it at that,” he added.

He also referred to President Mahama’s recent changes to the security setup, saying he had expected the changes to improve the sector but appeared not to have done so.

“His Excellency recently did a shake-up, so, I thought he was going to rather help that sector. I don't know why, and I don't know how, but I'm worried as a Ghanaian that these arrests, the last time it was in Netherlands, the other time it was in Paris, today it is in South Africa and we all know that we don't produce these narcotics here,” he added.

His comments come after recent drug-related arrests involving suspected narcotics linked to Ghana, including cases in the Netherlands, Paris and, more recently, South Africa.

The suspect, a 52-year-old South African national, was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport after allegedly arriving from Accra, Ghana, with substances suspected to be heroin worth more than R2 million.

The man was intercepted by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), with support from the Border Management Authority, on Sunday, September 20, 2026.

According to South African police, a search of his luggage uncovered bullet-like objects and blocks containing substances suspected to be heroin.

The suspect is expected to appear before a South African court later this week to face drug trafficking-related charges.

Meanwhile, Ghanaian authorities are yet to officially comment on the latest bust.
