President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to draw inspiration from the legacy of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, as the country marks Founder’s Day.

In a Facebook post on Monday, September 21, 2026, President Mahama described the occasion as an opportunity to reflect on what he called the “immortal legacy” of Dr Nkrumah.

He said Nkrumah’s pursuit of political freedom, Pan-African unity and self-reliance helped establish Ghana as a beacon of hope on the global stage.

President Mahama referenced Nkrumah’s famous declaration that “the black man is capable of managing his own affairs”, saying the principle remains an important part of Ghana’s national identity and pride.

According to him, while Nkrumah led the struggle for Ghana’s political independence, the broader task of building a prosperous nation remains unfinished.

He therefore urged Ghanaians to draw from Nkrumah’s vision and contribute to the country’s development.

“Let us draw strength from Osagyefo’s vision and contribute in our own way to attaining the Resetting Ghana Agenda,” he said.

The President also called on Ghanaians at home and abroad to put aside divisions and embrace what he described as selfless patriotism.

He said such collective commitment was necessary to achieve economic freedom and social justice.

President Mahama further stressed the need for Ghanaians to work together to build a country that provides opportunities and can withstand future challenges.

“Just as Nkrumah fought for our political independence, we have a collective duty today to build a prosperous, equitable, and resilient Ghana.”

Dr Nkrumah, who led Ghana to independence from British colonial rule in 1957, is remembered for his advocacy for African unity, industrialisation and economic self-reliance.

Founder’s Day is observed on September 21, the birth date of Dr Nkrumah, although the day has undergone changes in its official designation and observance over the years.

President Mahama concluded his message by wishing Ghanaians a happy Founder’s Day and urging citizens to remain committed to the development of the country.
