Member of Parliament for Akuapem South, Lawrencia Adwoa Dwiwonu, has supported more than 1,000 newly admitted Senior High School (SHS) students in the constituency with educational materials and financial assistance.

The gesture, which forms part of her efforts to support students as they transition into the next stage of their education, included a package of exercise books and GH¢500 for each beneficiary.

The items were received on behalf of the students by their parents and guardians at a short ceremony held at the premises of the Aburi Methodist Church in Aburi in the Eastern Region.

The event brought together queen mothers, Municipal Chief Executives, constituents, opinion leaders and other stakeholders from across the Akuapem South Constituency.

The initiative forms part of Dwiwonu’s Bepɔw So Hann – Education Empowerment Policy, which reflects her commitment to supporting students across the constituency with essential educational needs and empowering them to pursue their educational dreams.

According to the MP, the initiative was introduced last year and is intended to become an annual intervention for newly admitted SHS students in the constituency for as long as she remains the Member of Parliament.

Presenting the items, Dwiwonu described the intervention as her personal contribution towards easing some of the financial pressures confronting families as their children begin their SHS education.

“This gesture is my widow’s mite to support you in your next stage of your academic progression.

“You need to go and take your academic work seriously. Let your books always be your companion, ensuring you get the best from your education,” she said.

She encouraged the students to take their academic work seriously and make effective use of the opportunity they have been given to pursue secondary education.

The MP further urged the students to be mindful of the company they keep, cautioning them against allowing bad friends to negatively influence their behaviour and academic performance.

She encouraged them to live responsible lives and remain focused on their education so that the investments being made in their future would yield meaningful results.

Dwiwonu said the support was intended not only to provide immediate assistance to the beneficiaries but also to encourage them to appreciate the importance of education and strive for excellence.

She urged the students to remain disciplined, focused and committed to their studies as they embark on their Senior High School journey.

Parents commend initiative

Some parents and guardians who received the items on behalf of the students expressed appreciation for the intervention, describing it as timely support for families preparing their children for SHS.

One of the recipients said the GH¢500 would go a long way to help parents and guardians meet some of the immediate needs of their children as they prepare to report to school.

According to the recipient, the intervention was particularly significant because, to their knowledge, no previous Member of Parliament for Akuapem South had undertaken a similar initiative on such a scale to support newly admitted SHS students.

The parents and guardians expressed gratitude to the MP and appealed for the initiative to be sustained to benefit future cohorts of students in the constituency.

The Bepɔw So Hann – Education Empowerment Policy is expected to continue serving as a platform through which students across the Akuapem South Constituency receive support with essential educational needs, with the broader objective of helping young people pursue their education and realise their aspirations.
