Former France international, Marcel Desailly, has opened up about his Ghanaian roots and the circumstances that led him to choose French nationality as a teenager.

Born in Accra, Desailly revealed in a 1995 interview that he left Ghana at the age of four and moved to Nantes, France, where he began his football journey.

At 17, Desailly said he was faced with a difficult choice between his Ghanaian identity and French nationality, explaining that choosing Ghana would have prevented him from continuing his professional football career in France.

“I chose French because if I chose Ghana, I wouldn’t play anymore in my team. I couldn't begin professional," he stated

Despite representing France at international level, Desailly stressed that he remained proud of his Ghanaian heritage, revealing that both his parents are from Osu, Accra.

“Sure that I play for the French national team, but I'm Ghanaian, I'm born in Ghana. I have all my family here,” he said.

Desailly enjoyed a highly successful career, winning the European Cup with Marseille in 1993 and AC Milan in 1994. He also reached the final again with Milan against Ajax in 1995.

He also revealed that he had bought a house for his mother in Ghana and another for himself, expressing his intention to maintain a strong connection with the country of his birth.
