A 52-year-old South African man has been arrested at the OR Tambo International Airport after allegedly arriving from Accra, Ghana, with substances suspected to be heroin worth more than R2 million.

The man was intercepted by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), with support from the Border Management Authority, shortly after arriving on a flight from Accra.

According to South African police and a report by sundayworld.co.za, a search of his luggage uncovered bullet-like objects and blocks containing substances suspected to be heroin.

The arrest was made on Sunday, September 20, 2026, during an intelligence-led operation at the airport.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court later this week to face drug trafficking-related charges.

South African authorities said investigations are ongoing to determine whether the suspect has links to organised crime networks.

SAPS said it would continue with intelligence-led operations and targeted enforcement at ports of entry to disrupt drug trafficking networks.
