Former National Vice Chairperson of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sophia Horner-Sam, has died at the age of 77.

The family announced her death in a statement shared on Facebook by Mustapha Abdul-Hamid on September 19, 2026, describing her as a distinguished Ghanaian stateswoman, diplomat and public servant.

Sophia Horner-Sam, who was born in 1949, served the NPP and Ghana in various capacities during her career.

She served as the party’s 3rd National Vice Chairperson and also held government positions as Deputy Western Regional Minister and Deputy Minister for Ports, Harbours and Railways.

She later served as Ghana’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Following news of her death, former Minister of State and aspiring National Vice Chairman for the NPP, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, expressed sadness over her passing and praised her contribution to the party and the country.

“I am saddened by the news of the death of H.E Sophia Horner-Sam. She was a dyed-in-the wool NPP person, whose service to our party and country cannot be quantified,” he wrote.

Abdul-Hamid said the late former NPP vice chairperson played an important role in guiding the party, particularly during difficult periods.

“She embodied the age-old wisdom of the old lady. Her counsel and guidance helped steer our party through turbulent waters,” he stated.

“My condolences go to her family. May God who called her to eternal rest be their consoler,” he added.

The family said funeral and memorial arrangements will be announced in due course.

Meanwhile, the exact cause of her death has not been disclosed.
