President John Dramani Mahama has on September 15, 2026, commissioned the expanded Zonda Tec Ghana vehicle assembly plant in Tema, highlighting the government’s push to grow Ghana’s automotive industry through local manufacturing, skills development and increased value addition.

The President said Ghana must move beyond simply assembling vehicles from imported parts and develop a stronger local supply network in which Ghanaian companies manufacture vehicle components and provide services to the industry.

He urged investors and local businesses to explore opportunities in producing batteries, tyres, wiring systems, seats, glass, plastics and metal parts, saying this could create more jobs and strengthen businesses across the automotive value chain.

President Mahama also advocated longer-term and affordable vehicle financing to make locally assembled cars more accessible to Ghanaians, including public sector workers.

He said increased access to financing would help drive demand for vehicles produced in Ghana.

According to the President, Ghana’s mineral wealth and renewable energy resources could also support the development of a complete automotive ecosystem, linking mineral extraction to battery manufacturing, vehicle assembly and, eventually, vehicle exports.

The Phase III expansion of the Zonda Tec facility, which has an annual production capacity of 12,000 vehicles, adds to efforts to make manufacturing a major driver of Ghana’s economic growth.
