Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has revealed that the club signed Ghanaian attacker Jordan Ayew over other free-agent players because of his extensive experience and strong profile.

According to him, the club explored options including English striker Ivan Toney and others many expected them to sign. However, they eventually settled on the Black Stars skipper.

Wilder explained that, despite expectations to sign the English forward, Ayew was a more realistic option than Toney, whose profile would require more effort and resources to attract.

“I don’t know who people think I’m going to sign on the free transfer list. I don’t think they’re going to expect me to go and sign Ivan Toney or somebody like that,” Chris Wilder said.

The comment came after Sheffield United’s 1-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Championship, a match in which Jordan Ayew featured.

The forward delivered a decent performance, contributing to attacking threats, creating chances, and making defensive efforts to help his side avoid conceding further goals.

Jordan Ayew will now focus on gaining regular playing time and performing at his best ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
