Majority Leader and Builsa North MP, James Agalga, has highlighted some of the key issues discussed at the 63rd Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

In a Facebook post after the session, Agalga said the Council discussed Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, including access to employment, education, healthcare, housing and decent living conditions.

He said the session also highlighted growing threats to human rights globally, including armed conflicts, political polarisation, climate change and rapid technological developments.

Agalga noted that more than 60 wars currently involve at least one state, describing the figure as the highest since World War II.

He also said the Council stressed the importance of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, particularly for developing countries, and discussed the effects of climate change on livelihoods, displacement and food security.

According to him, concerns were also raised about disinformation, the misuse of artificial intelligence and the shrinking of civic space through social media and political polarisation.

Agalga said the Council considered about 35 resolutions covering country situations and broader human rights issues, with discussions also focusing on the role of parliaments in incorporating international human rights obligations into national laws.

As the leader of Ghana’s Parliamentary Delegation to the session, Mr Agalga said Ghana would continue to strengthen its laws to protect the rights of citizens.

“Ghana continues to be respected as a beacon of democracy and human rights. We will continue to strengthen our legislative frameworks to ensure every Ghanaian enjoys their full rights,” he said.

He thanked Parliament and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their support.
