A commercial transport driver, Abubakar Fuseini, and his conductor, Majeed, have been arrested by the Ashaiman Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) for extorting passengers through unauthorised fare hikes.

The suspects were apprehended following intense public outcry over widespread exploitation by transport operators. Commuters across various terminals have voiced deep frustration, complaining that arbitrary fare hikes are worsening an already difficult economic situation. Many passengers reported being subjected to insults and threats of ejection by conductors whenever they questioned the unauthorised jumps.

The arrests followed a targeted campaign led by Accra FM journalist Jacob Narbi, who exposed the operators for charging 20 cedis instead of the legally approved fare of 16 cedis.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has reiterated that no official fare increment has been authorised. The union condemned the act, emphasising that any driver increasing fares unilaterally is operating illegally and must face strict legal sanctions.

The suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations, and will soon be processed for court.

Transport authorities and passenger advocacy groups are urging commuters to remain vigilant and report any driver charging unapproved rates to the nearest police station or transport union office to curb further exploitation.
