Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations), Stan Xoese Dogbe, has directed the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) to begin ecological restoration works on reclaimed sections of the Kpeshie Lagoon following the demolition of illegal structures within the wetland’s protected buffer zone.

The restoration effort will involve the Forestry Commission and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), with plans to plant coconut and other suitable trees while introducing measures to safeguard the fragile ecosystem.

The directive was issued at Laboma after a demolition exercise carried out by the Post Flood Mitigation Task Force as part of ongoing efforts to restore flood-control infrastructure and protect critical water retention areas in Greater Accra.

In a post shared by Jubilee House on Sunday, September 13, 2026, Dogbe emphasised that the exercise goes beyond clearing structures and aims at restoring the reclaimed sections to their natural state.

According to him, the initiative is expected to strengthen the lagoon’s capacity to retain floodwaters and prevent future encroachment on the wetland.

The Kpeshie Lagoon is considered one of Accra’s key flood intervention points, but years of reclamation, sand filling and development have significantly reduced its natural water-holding capacity.

Authorities say the next phase of the exercise will include debris removal, vegetation restoration and sustained environmental protection measures to improve the resilience of the wetland against future flooding.
