The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has stressed the need to strengthen child protection measures to ensure that children can recognise abuse and seek help when their safety is threatened.

She made the call on Friday, September 11, 2026, when the Ministry engaged residents and stakeholders at Osu as part of its ongoing Community Dialogue Series in the Greater Accra Region.

The engagement placed particular emphasis on child protection and safety, with pupils from some basic schools in the area receiving education on their rights and how to report harassment, abuse and other situations that could threaten their wellbeing.

Dr Lartey said protecting vulnerable persons required the government to understand the challenges communities face and ensure that social protection interventions effectively responded to those concerns.

“The community dialogues go beyond informing citizens, providing an opportunity to listen to their concerns and better understand the challenges they face in accessing social protection services,” she said.

The pupils were encouraged to speak up about abuse and harassment and use appropriate reporting channels whenever they or other children faced situations that put their safety and wellbeing at risk.

The dialogue also addressed the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme, with residents receiving information on beneficiary enrolment, eligibility requirements and the rights and benefits of persons enrolled under the programme.

The Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey and Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, was present at the engagement, alongside the Municipal Chief Executive and other stakeholders.

The Community Dialogue Series will continue in other communities as the Ministry seeks to strengthen public awareness, improve access to social protection services and increase community participation in protecting vulnerable persons.
