The father of 20-year-old Central University law student Ivan Apprey Baidoo has recounted the events surrounding his son’s death in a motorcycle crash on the Accra-Tema Motorway on August 27, 2026.

Speaking on Citi FM’s EyeWitness News on September 9, 2026, Evans Baidoo said Ivan left home that day to play football with friends at East Legon but never returned.

Baidoo said in the evening, his wife called Ivan's phone and an unknown man answered and informed the family that he had been involved in an accident and had died.

The family subsequently contacted Tema General Hospital and was told that Ivan’s body had been brought there.

“I went to the hospital only to be confronted by my son’s dead body. He was still wearing the Barcelona jersey, khaki trousers and socks he had left home in. My question was, how did they (the hospital) determine his name?” he said.

The family was later directed to the Tema Community 1 Police Station, where they learned that the motorcycle rider involved in the crash had survived.

Baidoo said the rider told the family that he had been chased by a police officer on the motorway, who allegedly hit the rear of the motorcycle.

He said the impact caused Ivan to fall from the motorcycle, while the rider survived with minor injuries.

The rider also told the family that a good Samaritan who came upon the scene transported both men to Tema General Hospital.

The family later followed up at the Airport Police Station after being informed that the crash occurred outside the jurisdiction of the Tema Community 1 Police Station.

At the Airport Police Station, an investigator, Inspector Dansoa, informed them that the surviving rider had been taken into custody.

According to him, investigators later told the family that CCTV footage would be made available to help establish what had happened.

“Monday when we went to the police station, the rider was there. The agreement was that they were going to make CCTV footage available for all of us. The investigator has been giving excuses upon excuses. They have been lousy and lackadaisical. Imagine taking care of a child from age zero to university,” he said.

Baidoo further alleged that the police’s focus had largely been on the surviving rider rather than establishing what happened during the alleged pursuit involving the police officer.

The case subsequently went before the Kaneshie District Court, where the rider was initially charged with careless driving and negligently causing harm and granted bail.

Baidoo said the rider was later re-arrested and charged with murder.

He also raised concerns about the police’s presentation of the findings from Ivan’s post-mortem examination.

According to him, the police prosecutor told the court that the pathologist had not indicated that Ivan died as a result of an accident.

Baidoo said this surprised the family, particularly because the medical findings available to them pointed to severe trauma.

The family is also concerned about Ivan’s missing phone and the identity of the person who initially contacted them about his death.

He said the family has petitioned the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for a full-scale investigation.

“We have petitioned the police CID to conduct a full inquiry into the incident,” he added.
