The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has disclosed that Carlos Queiroz has been tasked with qualifying the Black Stars for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

According to him, the GFA leadership held extensive talks with the Portuguese coach regarding his targets and what he needs to do to improve the team’s fortunes in various aspects.

He emphasized that Queiroz’s primary mandate is to secure qualification for the 2027 AFCON to restore hope and pride in the team.

Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, Asante Twum stressed that the team cannot afford to miss another AFCON tournament after the disappointment of the previous edition.

“We had discussions before we concluded extending Carlos Queiroz’s contract, but the task is to guide the Black Stars back to the AFCON next year. We were not there last year, and we cannot afford to miss out this time around,” Asante Twum said.

This follows the extension of Queiroz’s contract after guiding the Black Stars to the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In the AFCON qualifiers, Ghana have been drawn in Group C alongside neighbors Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, and Somalia.

The Black Stars will begin their qualifying campaign away to Côte d’Ivoire at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké on September 24, 2026.

They will then return home to face The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later on September 27, 2026.
