A self-styled Ghanaian preacher has stirred controversy after criticising middle-aged individuals who spend their time playing video games on consoles, which he believes are meant for children.

In a viral video of the man of God preaching to a congregation, he said one’s “life is a joke” if they are around the age of 38 and spend a significant amount of their time playing video games.

He argued that while such a person’s colleagues are building industries, developing farms, running businesses and sealing major deals, they are instead spending their time playing games and watching television.

“At this age, you are still playing children’s games. We come to your house and you are holding a PlayStation. How old are you? 38. Your life is a joke! When your friends are building industries, making farms, doing great businesses and sealing deals, you are playing PlayStation and watching African Magic. At midnight, when you are hungry, you go and boil rice,” he said.

The self-styled man of God further recalled an occasion when he was invited to speak at a meeting, where a man questioned him about his age after listening to his speech.

“I was invited to a meeting to speak. When I went there and finished speaking, the man looked at me and said, ‘How old are you?’ And I said, ‘Why are you asking my age?’ He said, ‘The way you speak, you speak very maturely.’ And I said, ‘But I’m not a child,’” he added.

The preacher’s remarks have attracted criticism online, with some social media users questioning his view that playing video games is inappropriate for adults.

Others have also argued that age should not determine whether someone can enjoy recreational activities such as gaming, as long as it does not interfere with their responsibilities.
