A delegation from AKA Energy Systems has briefed President John Dramani Mahama on plans to develop a 270-megawatt solar power project to supply electricity to the Gomoa Special Economic Zone and the Gomoa Eco Park.

In a Facebook post, the delegation, led by Gomoa Central Member of Parliament Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, said preparations for the project were underway, with Phase One expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

“The project will be developed in phases, and we assured the President that Phase One will be completed by the end of 2027,” he stated.

The project is expected to serve as a major source of power for the Gomoa Special Economic Zone, which is being developed as a hub for manufacturing, industrial and commercial activities in the Central Region.

AKA Energy Systems has already begun preliminary work on the project. Earlier this year, the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the proposed 270MW solar plant and took A Plus on a tour of its solar facility in Canada to showcase the technology behind the project.

The Gomoa area already has a 20MW solar power plant at Onyaadze, which was commissioned in 2018 and developed by Meinergy Ghana.

The proposed 270MW facility would have more than 13 times the capacity of the existing plant, significantly expanding the area's renewable energy generation capacity.
