President John Dramani Mahama has called for greater investment in Ghana’s women’s football, arguing that the country’s female teams have delivered more success on the international stage than their male colleagues despite receiving less financial backing.

Speaking at the Jubilee House during a meeting with representatives of Medeama Sporting Club, Nations FC and Ampem Darkoa, on Tuesday, September, 2026, Mahama said Ghana’s achievements in women’s football deserves greater recognition and support.

“Our women have done much better in women's soccer than men's soccer. Our women have won more trophies for us than men. Yet we put all the money in men's soccer,” he said.

As such, he called for ways to help improve the sport.

“In the spirit of affirmative action, we must look at the women's soccer teams and also help to bring them out,” he added.

His comments come against the backdrop of a strong period for Ghana’s women’s national teams.

The Black Queens secured bronze medals at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in 2016 and 2024, giving Ghana its only senior football medals since 2015.

At youth level, the Black Princesses also claimed gold at the 2023 African Games, further highlighting the success of Ghana’s women’s teams.

Mahama believes these accomplishments should prompt a rethink of how resources are distributed across Ghanaian football, particularly given the women’s ability to compete successfully at continental level.
