A goalkeeper playing in the ninth tier of English football has been selected to become the next king of the Tooro tribe in Uganda.

According to reports, George Desmond Kamurasi, popularly known as “Big G”, was chosen by a committee to succeed his late cousin, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died aged 34 while receiving treatment for cancer.

Kamurasi, a British national, currently captains SE Dons in the Southern Counties East League Premier Division, placing him far removed from the traditional setting in which the next ruler of the Tooro people might be expected to emerge.

His selection has already generated mixed reactions in Uganda, with some supporters attracted to his perceived “no-nonsense” character, while others have questioned whether someone raised in the United Kingdom can adequately represent the Tooro people and their traditions.

Despite his British upbringing, Kamurasi has strong royal connections.

His grandfather, King George Rukidi III, was the ruler of Tooro and famously welcomed the late Queen Elizabeth II during her 1954 tour of Uganda.

The appointment therefore places Kamurasi at the centre of both a footballing and royal story, as he prepares for a completely different role from the one he has occupied on English football pitches.

However, his transition to the throne could begin with an unusual scheduling problem.

Kamurasi could reportedly miss the funeral of his late cousin because it clashes with SE Dons’ next cup fixture.
