B5 Plus Company Limited has presented a GH¢400 million tax cheque to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), with the Authority urging businesses and individuals to honour their tax obligations to support national development.

The presentation was made at an engagement involving the company and the GRA, where the Commissioner of the GRA’s Domestic Tax Revenue Division, Dr Martin Kolbil Yamborigya, commended B5 Plus for its tax compliance.

He said taxes paid by businesses and individuals provide government with resources to finance critical public services, including roads, schools, hospitals, security and social interventions.

“The taxes paid by B5 Plus are not simply figures on a tax statement. They represent a contribution towards the provision of roads, schools, hospitals, security, social interventions and other public services that benefit all of us,” he said.

Dr Yamborigya said a stronger domestic revenue base was important to Ghana’s efforts to finance development and reduce its dependence on borrowing and external assistance.

He urged businesses and individuals to keep proper records, file accurate tax returns on time and pay the correct taxes.

He also appealed to consumers to request VAT invoices when making applicable purchases to help the GRA reduce revenue leakages.

“When you pay VAT, ask for your VAT invoice,” he said.

The Commissioner, however, stressed that government also had a responsibility to ensure that public resources were used efficiently and accounted for.

“Government has a responsibility to use public resources efficiently and accountably,” he said.

He said the GRA would continue to administer tax laws fairly, efficiently and professionally while working to make tax compliance easier and more convenient for taxpayers.

B5 Plus, chaired by Mukesh Thakwani, operates in Ghana’s iron and steel manufacturing sector.

Dr Yamborigya encouraged other companies and individuals to emulate B5 Plus by meeting their tax obligations, describing tax compliance as an important contribution to Ghana’s development.

“Your compliance is your contribution. Your contribution is part of Ghana’s development,” he said.
