The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has warned the public against the improper handling and use of Ghana cedi notes and coins, stating that offenders could be arrested and prosecuted.

In a public notice issued on Friday, September 4, 2026, the central bank said people who damage or misuse the national currency could face penalties, including fines or imprisonment.

The BoG said practices such as spraying money at social events, throwing notes on the ground, stepping or dancing on them, and using them to make bouquets, jewellery and decorations are not acceptable.

The Bank particularly raised concerns about money bouquets often made for weddings, birthdays, graduations and other celebrations. It described the practice as improper and contrary to the law.

The BoG also warned against tearing, crumpling, staining, soiling, writing on, cutting or damaging cedi notes and coins in any other way.

It further cautioned against using images of the Ghanaian currency without its authorisation and selling coins above their face value.

"Banknotes and coins issued by the Bank of Ghana are solely legal tender and must be handled in a manner that preserves their condition, quality and usability," the central bank said.

The BoG explained that significant resources are used to produce and maintain the country’s currency and urged the public to protect it.

It added that it is working with law enforcement agencies to monitor prohibited activities and take action against offenders, while urging individuals, businesses and institutions to report suspected violations to the appropriate authorities.
