The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has renewed its call for Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie to resign, following some statements he made about the performance of certain state-owned enterprises (SOEs).

Speaking on The KeyPoints on TV3 on Saturday, September 5, 2026, Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Haruna Mohammed, said the remarks give the impression that the Chief Justice is overly supportive of President John Dramani Mahama and his administration.

He said Justice Baffoe-Bonnie must either withdraw the comments and apologise to the public or step down from his position as Chief Justice.

"The Chief Justice must retract and apologise or resign and be sent to the Council of State,” he said.

"A former Chief Justice has resigned and there is a vacancy there," he added.

Haruna Mohammed maintained that the Chief Justice was wrong in making the comments and referred to provisions in the Constitution, the Code of Conduct of Judges and other legal documents to buttress his argument.

His comments followed remarks made by Justice Baffoe-Bonnie during a visit to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and the Minerals Income Investment Fund.

The Chief Justice had praised the performance of some state institutions, saying, "looking at the recent performance of some of the State institutions, one wonders what we have been doing in the past eight years."

Haruna Mohammed further questioned the appropriateness of the remarks, saying they could make the Chief Justice appear to be acting as a political communicator for the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

"If you did not see the video, you will think that he is an NDC communicator who has been tasked to go and praise the President," Mohammed stressed.
