Former Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, has officially taken leave of the Ministry of Defence following a send-off ceremony held in his honour in Accra.

The ceremony, held on Friday, September 4, 2026, brought together senior officials of the Ministry of Defence and the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to recognise Genfi’s service and contributions during his tenure.

The event was particularly significant as Genfi served during a challenging period for the Ministry, including the death of the then Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah.

Speaking at the ceremony, Genfi expressed gratitude to the leadership and staff of the Ministry and the GAF for their support and cooperation throughout his tenure.

He acknowledged Defence Minister Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, the Chief Director and management of the Ministry, the Service Chiefs and other senior military officers.

Genfi said the ceremony offered an opportunity to reflect on what he described as the “monumental achievements” recorded during his time in office.

Defence Minister Kenneth Gilbert Adjei commended Genfi for his contribution to advancing the Ministry’s agenda and supporting the development of Ghana’s defence sector.

He also praised his commitment, counsel and support, particularly during difficult periods, and wished him well in his new assignment.

The Ministry of Defence and the GAF presented Genfi with citations in recognition of his service, while the Chief of the Defence Staff presented him with a ceremonial sword.

Genfi said he was touched by the gesture, describing the sword and other tokens as symbols of appreciation for the work accomplished collectively during his tenure.

At the farewell ceremony, Genfi expressed appreciation to President Mahama for the opportunity to serve and the confidence reposed in him.

“As I move into my new responsibilities, I carry with me the lessons, discipline, and camaraderie of the MoD and the GAF,” he said.

His departure from the Defence Ministry follows President John Dramani Mahama’s government changes announced on August 26, 2026.

Under the changes, Genfi was reassigned from his position as Deputy Minister for Defence to serve as Presidential Adviser on National Resilience and Emergency Preparedness, with immediate effect.

He had served as Deputy Minister for Defence since March 2025, during which he was involved in initiatives aimed at improving the welfare, modernisation and operational readiness of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Among other initiatives, he supported efforts to improve military communications, technology, accommodation, training infrastructure and healthcare systems.

In May 2026, he inaugurated a 17-member committee to develop a comprehensive and sustainable Home Ownership Policy and Scheme for GAF personnel.

In July 2026, he also broke ground for three redevelopment projects at Burma Camp aimed at replacing ageing infrastructure with modern housing and office facilities for military personnel and their families.

Genfi also engaged on broader security issues, including emerging threats such as terrorism.

In April 2025, he called for stronger multilateral cooperation to address complex security challenges confronting countries across Africa.
