The Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Edem Agbana, has disclosed that some players in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) earn very low incomes, with one player he spoke to revealing that he earns just GH¢300.

He explained that he became aware of the plight of some players through personal interactions, describing the situation as worrying for those in the local league.

The MP stated that he does not entirely blame club owners, as the league suffers from a lack of significant investment and limited support from fans.

“I met a GPL player who told me he is paid GH¢300. There are players who earn less than GH¢1,000. But who do you blame? You can’t blame the team owners. As a team owner, I look at the investment going in, but there is low patronage, and the facilities are not there,” Edem Agbana said in an interview with Sporty FM.

He lamented the poor standards of the league, which have made it less competitive, and called on authorities to implement measures to revive it ahead of the 2026/2027 season.

“We have great potential, but we can do much better to make the Ghana Premier League very competitive. Currently, the league is not competitive, which is why some of our best players leave at the end of the season,” he added.
