Retired Major Patrick Adjei-Ampofo has recounted how he confronted then-General Fred Akuffo after learning that former Head of State General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong had been forced to sign his resignation letter.

Speaking in an interview with Kafui Dey, Major Adjei-Ampofo said he went directly to Akuffo’s office after the resignation was announced in the media.

He said despite being only a major at the time, he bypassed Akuffo’s Aide-de-Camp (ADC) and Military Assistant before entering the office, where Akuffo was meeting with the Governor of the Bank of Ghana and the Chief Justice.

“When I heard that, I went straight to Akufo's office. I went past his ADC, I went past his ME's office and I went straight into his office,” he recounted.

According to him, Akuffo was startled by his unexpected entry into the meeting.

Asked about his rank at the time, Major Adjei-Ampofo said he was “just a major”, attributing his boldness to a strong conviction that he had a responsibility to act.

He explained that he confronted Akuffo over the decision to force Acheampong out, warning that the development could have serious consequences for the country.

“So, when this happened, I went to Akuffo and I said, why did you do it? Now you put us all in trouble,” he said.

Major Adjei-Ampofo said Acheampong had repeatedly warned his ministers about the consequences of removing him from office.

According to him, Acheampong had cautioned that if he was forced out, he would be killed and the ministers would also face severe consequences.

“He told them every Wednesday at the meeting,” he said, adding that Acheampong had warned: “If you give me up, I know I'll be killed. But so will all of you be lined up and shot. And the country will go through difficulties.”

Major Adjei-Ampofo also said he was not surprised when the June 4, 1979, uprising occurred, insisting that he had anticipated a bloody uprising following the political developments at the time.

Asked whether he was surprised by the events of June 4, he replied: “No, no. I knew it was coming.”

He said although he did not know the individuals who would lead the uprising, he was convinced that a violent revolt was imminent.
