The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Volta Regional Chairman, Makafui Woanya, has urged President John Mahama to address the public dispute between GoldBod Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, and Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin.

According to him, the president’s continued silence on the matter raises concerns about the government’s commitment to ensuring discipline and accountability among public officials.

Sammy Gyamfi takes first legal step in Afenyo-Markin defamation case

Addressing journalists on September 3, 2026, he accused Gyamfi of exceeding the limits of his office by publicly engaging a sitting Member of Parliament.

“We are gathered here this morning to register our displeasure as a party in the Volta Region over Sammy Gyamfi’s conduct in public office and President Mahama’s failure to act.

“An appointee believes he’s above the president himself. An appointee has used the platform of the presidency to attack a lawmaker. That lawmaker was not only protecting the interest of Ghanaians. This is a clear violation of the Code of Ethics of this government itself published,” he said.

Woanya called on President Mahama to take steps to address the situation, stressing that government officials should be answerable for their conduct.

"Sammy Gyamfi chose to attack the Minority Leader, Honorable Afenyo-Markin. He levelled unfounded charges against him.... So when Sammy Gyamfi stood on a state platform and hurled insults instead of answers, he was not merely insulting one Member of Parliament, but he was insulting a son of Anlo, and a son of the Volta region. We as an NPP in this region will not sit in silence," he remarked.

He further warned against allowing the public disagreement to divert attention from the broader questions surrounding the reported $1.7 billion losses under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, saying the matter requires transparency and accountability.

Woanya said Gyamfi’s exchanges with the Effutu Member of Parliament were inappropriate for a government appointee and inconsistent with the standards expected of persons holding public office.

He stressed the need for a parliamentary probe into the alleged losses while calling on the president to act.

"President Mahama, the choice before you is simple. Ghanaians, including every patriot here in the Volta region, are watching closely to see which one you make.

"Either enforce the code of ethics you promised this country, or you confess by your silence that some appointees answer to no one, not even you," he added.

The dispute stems from questions raised by the Minority over the reported $1.7 billion losses associated with the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

Afenyo-Markin has been demanding explanations from the government regarding the reported losses.

Meanwhile, Afenyo-Markin has taken legal action against Gyamfi and the Multimedia Group Limited for defamation over comments describing him as an “extortionist”.

He is seeking general, aggravated and exemplary damages, as well as GH¢15 million in compensation, over the alleged defamatory statements made by Gyamfi during a live broadcast of the Newsfile on JoyNews.
