The government has announced plans to redevelop the slum around the Korle Lagoon in Accra, with proposals to replace the existing settlement with high-rise housing constructed from shipping containers.

Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, said the proposal forms part of measures to address the poor sanitation and public health conditions in the area.

According to him, the redevelopment will follow a military-led operation to evacuate residents and clear the dumpsite. The waste removed from the site will subsequently be transported to the Adepa Waste Management Centre at Nsawam.

Ayariga also disclosed that the Korle Lagoon would be dredged as part of the redevelopment programme.

He said the exercise is intended to improve the condition of the lagoon and address the environmental challenges that have persisted in the area.

Speaking to journalists during his visit to the area on Thursday, September 3, 2026, Ayariga said the government remained committed to clearing the site and providing better housing options for people living there.

Although he acknowledged that some residents could oppose the exercise, the Minister expressed confidence that the majority of people in Accra would support the initiative because of the need to address the deplorable conditions at the site.

“Those of us who want to clear it in Accra here, we are far more than those who want to resist clearing the mess,” he said.

The planned intervention is expected to address the sanitation and environmental challenges around the Korle Lagoon, while providing improved housing conditions for residents and supporting efforts to restore the area.
